DONALD TRUMP has arrived in Britain—or rather, he has detonated. British officials always knew there was the potential for an unhelpful intervention from America’s unpredictable president. But his comments last night—a blunt attack on the prime minister’s most important policy, and an endorsement of her rival—are worse than anything they had imagined. The question is: who benefits?
Mr Trump’s extraordinary interview with the Sun was published late on July 12th, as the president was half-way through a banquet with Theresa May and assorted dignitaries at Blenheim Palace. Mrs May had spoken with enthusiasm about the two countries’ “prosperous future”; British officials were busily promoting the message that America was just as keen. “Terrific to hear [Mr Trump] talk so positively about UK & US Trade tonight,” tweeted Liam Fox, the trade secretary.
