Whether homosexuality will remain a crime in India will be decided by five Supreme Court judges whose verdict today will have a seminal impact on gay rights in the country. The Supreme Court had in 2013 restored Section 377, a controversial British-era ban on consensual gay sex. Five petitioners challenged that order. The Supreme Court began hearing their petitions in July, beginning an emotional debate over the right to freedom and privacy. "No one should have to live in fear because of their sexuality," the judges said at a hearing. The comments have largely given hope to the gay community.
